Sync & Media Composition
Writing for film, TV and advertising: a rare specialism with a direct route into a professional career.
My track "DVD", written with George Barnett, synced at the Super Bowl 2026.
The Sync & Media Composition Programme builds the advanced creative and technical skills to write music that works on screen: music that is artistically authentic and commercially effective.
A portfolio of sync-ready compositions, written without losing your own sound.
I didn't set out to write for the screen. Like a lot of young musicians, I was focused on writing songs, performing and releasing my own music, with no idea sync even existed. When I was 15, I wrote a song with my teenage band. Years later, with the skills I had built since, I reworked that same song for a sync project, and it ended up in a BBC One documentary. That was the moment I understood that music can have a second life on screen, and sync has been a core part of my work, as a composer and as a teacher, ever since.
The programme is built on the principle that effective sync music does not require moving away from your creative identity. Students learn how to:
- Adapt their existing musical identity for briefs and commissions
- Work within stylistic and structural expectations while still developing originality
- Develop versatility across genres while keeping a recognisable sound
- Understand the balance between creativity and function in media music
Students refine their own sound while adapting it for professional media contexts, and learn how to take their own music projects and place them in sync. This is what I do differently: artists keep their sound, and I teach them how to sell it.
Students are guided through real-world composition practices used in sync licensing, trailer music, television scoring and library music production. This part of the industry has grown enormously, and global streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video and similar services drive sustained demand for original music across film, television and digital media. Sync and media composition offers a practical and often more sustainable route into professional music-making alongside developing your own artist project, something many musicians never realise is possible.

Pick a mood and watch the scene and the music shift together. This is what scoring to picture is really about.
Secondary, college and university students, and independent artists and producers expanding into sync.
